Re: The Autism and Asperger's Thread
^ Me too. Sometimes becoming too involved or even infatuated with people who are not romantic partners is said to be a possible sign of autism, I'm sure I've read in several places. I know I've done this a bit in the past and I'm wary of it now.
Glad the security guard has been nice. The security guards at my last gig were generally rotten to/about me. |

Re: The Autism and Asperger's Thread
I have been working in the main hotels restaurant a few times. I feel like it neurotypical central. There may be some autistic, and there are neurodivergent waiters, but they have to mask in a neurotypical sense. Watching this video, especially what the uploaded says about groups seems so true.

Re: The Autism and Asperger's Thread
Apparently a colleague was fired at work but I honestly suspect she might be autistic. We seemed to get in fine but she always complained about other people. Used gloves to clean tables, when other colleagues didn’t. Seems really sensitive to dirt.

Re: The Autism and Asperger's Thread
I notice she appears l passionate that I can imagine the talk over stimulating her to the point she might have to stim after the talk for a while. It actually reminds me of when I get angry with someone. Maybe that’s the only time I express my thoughts clearly in a vocal way. Maybe if I was more vocally confident I would talk about things I’m passionate about in a similar manner to her???

^ What a lovely young man. It's a shame that his mother says that when he was young she was convinced that he was going to "recover from his autism".

Haven't seen it, but it certainly sounds interesting, Unfortunately, I'm averse to spending extra money on subscription channels, But they do seem to be where most of the decent programmes are. |

Re: The Autism and Asperger's Thread
So I took the questionnaire at my GP for being autistic and "passed" (if that's the right phrase to use) She said I scored quite highly in regard to being autistic and referred me for formal diagnosis, which is a wild 2-year waiting list.
Also referred me to menscap for getting help before then, I'm sort of in shock. I don't really know what it means yet. |

Re: The Autism and Asperger's Thread
I was reading the "electricity of every living thing" and found out that the doctor whom Aspergers is named after had ties to Nazi eugenics so the author uses Neurodiverse when writing about autism. It may have been mentioned earlier on in thread. But I relate to the author decribing how she sees her autism as the way the brain is wired and not as a disorder. With bipolar I see it as a condition that fades to the background and not as a disorder.

Re: The Autism and Asperger's Thread
^ Yeah my understanding of this is also that Aspergers syndrome is no longer diagnosed in this country. I did a quick search of the NHS website. When I got to Aspergers on the list it just says (see autism).
So yes, in summary I think people who demonstrate traits under the criteria for what was previously the above are now diagnosed now with ASD. It's been merged with Autism. |

Re: The Autism and Asperger's Thread
^^ The thread title could be changed to The Autism Thread. It's an umbrella term then.
That's correct Aspergers is no longer a diagnostic label; it has been removed from the Diagnostic Manual. Instead people receive a diagnosis of ASD. Autism shouldn't even be in the DSM because the DSM is for 'Mental Disorders' which Autism is not. That's a whole other argument though! |

Re: The Autism and Asperger's Thread
My opinion is that the NHS is horrendous when it comes to diagnosing autism so it shouldn’t be a surprise that lots of people who attempt suicide in the uk might be undiagnosed autistic people.

Wow i just found out my sister was diagnosed with adhd. Something i may suspect i have but I’m pretty sure my family has neurological conditions that have gone undiagnosed and as a result became much worse mental illnesses.

Re: The Autism and Asperger's Thread
Found this video very interesting and enlightening on many aspects of Autism,
as it presents a lot of known facts and figures about it from clinical and academic studies and trials. It's mainly focused on known facts about childhood autism It's delivered by a Cambridge professor and highlights a lot of evidential material from studies, It's interesting that one of it's surprising main conclusions is that humans may have been genetically selected to have autism as it is in fact an evolutionary advantage. |

Re: The Autism and Asperger's Thread
^ We do have to be a bit careful about some of what Prof Baron-Cohen says about autism in general though as he was previously responsible for the "male brain" theory of autism which caused many females and a-typical presenting people to miss out on being diagnosed as autistic early on in life.
Some of the information about brain differences and brain development in that talk is very interesting though. |
