What's the worst experience you've paid money for?
I went on Oblivion at Alton Towers recently and it's one of the worst things I've ever done. I thought I might hate it - I like rollercoasters but don't like vertical drops, and despite appearances, Oblivion's is quite big. But I was all 'physical sensations are just in the mind - you can overcome them'. I didn't overcome them and let out an involuntary yelp that lasted about 10 seconds as it dropped.
What terrible things have you experienced that you've paid money for? |

A microwave bao bun I had once was also pretty bad.

Stranger Things Secret Cinema. I enjoyed the atmosphere, dressing up, and the company - but the overall experience was a bit lacklustre and a few days later we found out there were things we'd missed out on because it wasn't very clear. For people who have been to Secret Cinema experiences before it probably made sense, but it wasn't very friendly to people who weren't quite sure about what to do.
The food was hilarious. I had a veggie burger. They asked if I wanted vegan bacon on the top and I said yes to try it and it was bacon rasher crisps |

Re: What's the worst experience you've paid money for?
Probably the package tour for the Great Barrier Reef, Whitsunday Islands and Fraser Island. The waters in the area of the reef were murky that day and, though it was long ago, i don't remember coming away feeling particularly awed. Fraser island was packaged as a party adventure where you buddy up into a small group of about ten people and go roving about the perimeter in a big jeep, camping for a few nights. I remember it to be largely featureless. It was just a boozy, sandy, camping trip really. Whitsundays was basically a party that included a bit of snorkeling the day after.
I was suffering my first real period of social anxiety throughout these trips, which really didn't help. |

^^ That's the sort of thing that you'd expect to be really good. Must have been disappointing. Bet it wasn't cheap either.

The Harry Potter Forbidden Forest experience.
£60 to walk around a muddy wood with some lights. I did expect it to be shit though. |

Re: What's the worst experience you've paid money for?
An escape room in Madrid early in the morning after WorldPride, when the streets were being pressure washed and everything stunk of piss. It was in a dodgy looking building and took ages for someone to answer the buzzer, and when I eventually up to the top floor where the room was the guy who greeted me looked hungover and as if he'd slept there. The escape room was clearly very old and worn out, some of the puzzles were broken and one hadn't been reset. I could have finished it within about 10 minutes, but it quickly became an hour of intense awkwardness, where instead of escaping the goal was to go through the motions pretending that everything was fine so the guy running the game wouldn't feel bad as he watched through the cameras, even though he should have felt bad and given me a refund.

Re: What's the worst experience you've paid money for?
As part of an SAUK meet I booked a boat ride in early July for a trip from Edinburgh out to something called Bass rock, (it's a big island with an old prison on it)
We had just sailed out into the sea and a huge squall broke out in the middle of the trip, and the sea was really rough, So, we were bouncing about getting soaked and trying to outrun a squall,.. When we got to the island it had an overpowering stench of bird shit,.. and we realised why the island always looked white,.. it was decade after decade of bird shit raining down on it |
