Re: What didn't you know until recently?
That Thomas Crapper didn't actually invent the flush toilet, that credit belongs to John Harrington and predates Crapper by over 250 years.
Crapper became famous for his lavatorial exploits after being hired by King Edward VII to design several royal lavatories. |

Re: What didn't you know until recently?
^
I have had a lot of practice at changing wheels. My record at work is less than 4 minutes for a wheel swap, but then sometimes I'm changing a dozen wheels a week. It's a lot easier when all the cars are the same make and model and we have a dozen spares sitting in the garage just to swap. But that is really cheating, as I have the spare on the bumper ready to roll straight into place. Plus the fact that I have ab electric air gun to undo the bolts/nuts and put them back on again. Nut should always be torqued when you replace the wheel, otherwise if you over tighten them snapped bolt/thread or damaged alloy wheel. The hardest part is usually getting the wheel off the stub, especially if it hasn't been off for 18 months. You new a block of wood and a big hammer to to bash the rim until it cracks the seal. Trouble is most new cars only have a spare wheel as an optional extra, and on Vauxhalls if you but a spare and it is not registered to the car, you get a permanent warning light and it shows no reading for that wheel. |

Re: What didn't you know until recently?
If you are in receipt of certain benefits or, some longer term illnesses you can apply for a disabled person's rail card, to get a third off rail fares.
Also, they have an offer on some of the other railcards at the moment but not much use if you travel alone or are between 30 and 60. |

I have a disabled persons railcard, as I am hard of Hearing and wear hearing aids, it means my brother can travel with me for free.

Re: What didn't you know until recently?
I used to have a Two Together rail card for me and my mum. You get 1/3 off when you travel together. We used to visit my sister a lot, so it made it loads cheaper. I paid for the travel card with Tesco Clubcard points.

^ All the more reason to chuck a few nukes at the cursed boulder. As my mum always says, 'we must destroy the lunar menace at all costs'.
I recently learned that the Big Break theme tune was sung by Captain Sensible, and not Chas & Dave as I always assumed. |

That gogglebox is more or less scripted, the people watching the programs don't watch an entire show of anything and are told what reaction to give.

Olde Steve Jobs had pancreatic cancer. He refused early medical intervention and went on a fruit only diet. And then it got worse, and was no longer able to be treated by docs. So he died.

They always do their gigs on weeknights so I’ve never been able to go. I’ll knit a little biscuit for you to take in your pocket so I can be there in woollen form. |

I'd quite like that!
(Re: live) Yeah.... no. Maybe sometime. I went looking for live stuff last night, which is where i discovered they were female vocals. I think it's more apparent on the 7 album, as i listened to a few tracks on there. Not that it matters, it's just a bit deceptive. I shall probably check out the other stuff later because i've only heard Teen Dream and 7. |

Re: What didn't you know until recently?
^ One of the few bands that generally get better with each album (although my favourite is TYLS, but it's closely followed by the most recent one). I first saw them in 2008 and even then I remember comments from a couple of guys next to me in the audience shocked that she was a woman. People online often seemed to make that assumption. It's difficult to hear her as a man knowing she isn't, she always reminded me a little of Nico.

Re: What didn't you know until recently?
Cool. Music review seems to hold them and all the albums beginning from Teen Dream in high favour. I can still easily think of it as a male vocal. It's not that it's very male like, it's the consistency, there's few 'gives' where you can say, 'ah... there it is'. I was put in mind someone like the guy from Keane, who's more sing-songy and goes through the range but could sound like her in her style. Probably. I'm only taking the TD album and a couple of Keane songs that i've heard on the radio in the mix here. It's bugging me now because i'm sure there's someone else i've heard (like a big artist) who sounds almost identical in voice and style....

Re: What didn't you know until recently?
Okay, so i listened to the new album and was profoundly unimpressed. I relistened to 7 and, it's good, but not great. Teen Dream is easily better than both. Hoping for it's equal.

We learnt about them when I was at school. Very common years ago. We used to have a saying if you slept in: You slept the Caller (what we called the Knocker-upper around this area)

Aha. Maybe kids learn about them at school in Britain? I didn't grow up here.
"The Caller" sounds a bit more credible than the knocker-upper haha |
