Miss Meadows

Going straight in the keep bag.

Such a beautiful film. Katie Holmes is outstanding as the prim and proper, eccentric and slightly crazy Miss Meadows. Has an unusual sex scene, but plenty of good vigilante action.

Nice film, a little long but very pleasant.

This is exactly how I felt. Loved the lead-up to the bomb trial, then the rest of it was blokes sitting around a desk and despite what I acknowledge to be great acting it was kinda boring. Especially after already sitting there for 2 hr (coz I saw Barbie straight before Oppenheimer, like you're meant to, lol). Anyway, I would still give it 7/10. And it had Cillian Murphy, so that's another point, 8/10.

I was expecting a lot more from Barbie, I thought it would be full of wit and insightful humour. Instead it was largely just exactly how I would have thought it would be before I somehow got it into my head that it would be a 'clever' take on society. The 10 min bit of Ryan Gosling singing and dancing was seriously niche, and I hated it. Lol. I thought 'Ken' was going to be funny, but nope. Regretfully I give Barbie a generous 5/10 and that's only coz it had dolphins in it briefly.

Look, guys, the film is called Barbie. It's about a children's doll. It's not a groundbreaking, razor-sharp critique of modern society, it's a $100 million dollar advert for a Mattel product.

It has now taken over $1 billion at the box office.

^ It's probably making a lot because it's one that people are going to with their friends, dressing up and making a night out of it. You don't get many of those these days. Since when has any summer blockbuster been a groundbreaking, razor-sharp critique of anything?

Girl Interrupted

Brilliant film, very touching.

Angelina Jolie was outstanding in her role, well deserving of her Oscar. Whoopi Goldberg is also excellent as always. My only criticism is that it's a bit long.

Watership Down

Hadn't seen it in years. Not bad for a children's film. Bit boring for an adult.

Apparently it was banned in several US schools for being too violent.

Plague Dogs is another good film by the same writer. There is a children's version and an adults version with the bloody animal deaths. It's about two animals who escape from a vivisection lab. It's farcical, bit darker themed than WD.

I read the book of this and it was really dark/upsetting. Still makes me cringe whenever I think of it.

Dragged Across Concrete - pretty much what you'd expect for a heist film from the director of Bone Tomahawk.

It has what must be the most brutal example of a character being introduced as a sacrificial lamb in all cinema - it's so awful it's almost funny Nonetheless, 7/10 I suppose.

^ Have you seen Brawl in Cell Block 99, from the same director? It... goes places.

I still need to watch Dragged Across Concrete.

^ I have...even Dragged Across Concrete isn't quite as grim as 2 hours of Vince Vaughan stamping on prison inmate heads.

Hopefully his next film will be about a kitten playing with a ball of knitting yarn.

Palm Trees and Power Lines.

Older man/ teen girl relationship. Slow paced, moody and grey, with explanatory themes lurking in the background re poor parenting and so forth. Ends up pimping her out, because why not - comes a point in any movie where the director has to play their cards. Actually quite a well composed film at points if one wants to get meta about it and read the slow pace, and the "what does she see in this gormless loser" question, as indicative of real life grooming, etc . Didn't really care about either of them though.

Nicely done, a good look at Elton John's life. His biography's also worth reading if you're interesting.

Barbie. I liked it! Not sure I've ever seen Ryan Gosling in anything before, but he stole the show here.

I haven't watched a film in absolutely ages.

I'm hopefully going to see Barbie on Thursday.

I also would like to see Asteroid City (despite Appear's scathing review ) but not at the cinema.

^ I was thinking it wouldn't be something i would be interested in until right wing commentators started complaining about it and now i think maybe I'll give it a go. It's very feminist, apparently.

I forgot about Asteroid City, I do want to see that.

Yeah, I didn't love Barbie but I did quite like it, and most of that was the sets and outfits and whatever Ryan Gosling was doing.

I'm sure Barbie's a fine film and everything, but I can't get my head around enough people seeing it for it to take in over a billion dollarydoos. All those people thinking 'I really want to watch a film about Barbie', and then actually going out of their way to watch a film about Barbie. The children's doll. Sindy must be livid.

I suppose you could say the same about the latest Marvel film, or Avatar, which apparently everyone in the world rushed out to see and then had absolutely nothing to say about it (twice).

It's like when I'd watch Top of the Pops as a kid, and when they'd say how many copies the No.1 sold my brain wouldn't be able to process it. All those people queued up in Our Price, clutching their CD/7"/tape? (god, I'm old) Surely not.

It's become a film to see with friends, wear pink etc. Pose with the Barbie box in some cinemas and pop it on Instagram. If you haven't got an Instagram pic of going to see Barbie then your life is of no meaning - sort of effect.

The paper straw in my drink disintegrated as quickly as my interest did .
