Have you been diagnosed, or self-diagnosed/suspected, with anything other than SA?

If there are any others that aren't in the poll and you feel comfortable posting what you have please feel free to.

Not diagnosed but I strongly suspect I'm on the autistic spectrum, which would explain quite a lot if it's the case.

^ I also missed Agoraphobia, sorry.

^^ Quite a few posters here have been diagnosed with autism as adults or suspect that they may be on the autism spectrum which is interesting.

^ Yeah autism and social functioning challenges (and subsequent depression and anxiety) frequently go together.

I think you click on “thread tools” in the right corner of your first post and it should allow you to edit the options.

At the moment I haven’t been diagnosed with anything. (sorry to add to the list of options not included hehe)

Sometimes I think I really ought to go and see what I’ve got going on, but I know what I’m like - by that I mean that worry that I’ll then use it as a crutch or an excuse to fuel my avoidance. Plus I work and can manage things well (pre-pandemic!). I think there’s a high chance that I’m on the autistic spectrum. I’m me and don’t really want to have that sort of fixed definition, like I’m stuck/trapped in a certain way.

In the past when I couldn’t cope with things I went to the doc and had treatment for anxiety and depression, but was never given a diagnosis. It was seen as a brief episode.

I had very bad selective mutism until recently.

(Please don’t quote)

^ seeking a diagnosis seems like the most sensible option in terms of getting support, understanding what’s happening and finding ways of coping, managing it etc. I’m just a strange bean hehe.

Depression, and I’ve had therapy for it too.

Undiagnosed but I have begun to realise I’m probably on the autistic spectrum, and have been in denial for years. I will hopefully see the GP about it soon, but I’m still unsure about going.

I also have a physical disability which has also added significantly to the anxiety and depression I believe. I don’t think about it too much, but it does upset me sometimes. Strangely if I’m having a good day or starting to feel positive about something, my brain then tells me ‘remember you have that disability too, don’t get too cheerful’. I’m my own worst enemy sometimes, I must stop that!

I've been diagnosed with depression and social anxiety and used to take medication for it before stopping. I also think that I am on the autistic spectrum because of my strong need to focus on only one task at a time and feeling confused and disoriented by sudden change or unexpected noises or movement.

Aspergers, Adhd, Cptsd, Dyspraxia, Eating disorders, Mild Agoraphobia.

I'm not actually diagnosed with any of these but I strongly suspect I have them. I used to think I had bpd or maybe bipolar but it sounds more like complex ptsd.

SA and depression.

Bipolar was discussed a few times about a decade ago but I never went through with the assessment. I suspect not these days since moods seem to have become less extreme over time.

I've been diagnosed officially with social anxiety disorder by a shrink. somewhere in my GP record is apparently general anxiety as well but I don't know if I agree with it.

Getting an actual diagnosis of anything has been an immense challenge. I keep being told, "we are not a diagnostic service" by mental health services who also don't really want to deal with me cause I don't tick any of their box's ie I'm not a risk. However after fighting somewhat I seem to have narrowed it down to AvPD or SzPD or at least traits of these and possibly (cPTSD) trauma (again a dirty word with the CMHT seemingly).

I'm also on the waiting list for an autism assessment, I'm not sure I really believe I have ASD but after 20 plus years of being ignored, mucked about and yet not living a full life I'm ruling everything in or out. And I really don't care anymore. It shouldn't be this hard to get an answer and or help in 2021.

I've had Agoraphobia in the past though not diagnosed with it cause well I was agoraphobic, lol.

^ You're right it definitely shouldn't be that hard! Are only psychiatrists supposed to issue a diagnosis?

I was diagnosed with 'severe social phobia' by a psychiatrist when I was a teenager (although they didn't actually tell me at the time and I found out later) but that was when I was in a mental health unit. When I tried to go to my GP for more support years later she said to me that there was only one psychiatrist covering the whole county and I would never see a psychiatrist before I'd even mentioned it

diagnosed with asd, told by a mental health practitioner I have cptsd but not diagnosed. Seem to have traits of adhd, which I've noticed often overlap with asd.

Been treated for anxiety in the past but never had any support specifically for anything else.

I was officially diagnosed with having social anxiety and depression.

In recent years I would say that I also suffer very badly with generalised anxiety but I'm not looking for an official diagnosis for that. Personally, the less labels the better. There's also been many times when I felt I was very close to becoming Agoraphobic.

It's interesting to see that quite a lot of people with social anxiety have also been diagnosed with Autism/Aspergers especially much later in their life.
I've taken a number of online tests and my score is always extremely low for Autism which I think is probably accurate as I can't relate to some of the main symptoms listed such as struggling to understand the emotions of others and needing to keep to a rigid routine although I realise that the spectrum is so varied and effects sufferers in very different ways.

It was more that I thought it would be interesting to see how many people "only" have SA and nothing else.

Never officially diagnosed with anything, but SA for sure. When I was young, it was about as bad as it can be. Any worse and I’d have been on a psychiatric ward. In my experience, therapists are reluctant to diagnose, though I’m sure “anxiety” is down on my medical records.

Self-diagnosed (and I’m pretty sure about these): avoidant personality disorder, including toxic shame, mild paranoia and low-level depression. Also prone to horrific bouts of agitated depression (basically depression fused with anxiety, where you can’t sit still, can’t sleep, can’t bear to be alone, etc. Oh god I pray I never experience it again).

I used to be a textbook example of an avoidant personality but that was always counterweighted or even contradicted with schizoid traits. Social anxiety for me has typically been an expression, of indeterminate significance, of being avoidant. However, these things are quite complicated in terms of delineating cause and nature, and I only refer to known personality disorder as models or types rather than as a discrete diagnoses.

I would not ever seek a diagnosis. I have learned to live with who I am, and what I am is in my bones - it can't be excised and slung in the waste basket like an old tumour could be.

I don't think seeking a diagnosis means that. It's not about dismissing someone or judging who they are, it's about trying to understand how they perceive the world, what is impacting them and how understanding those things might help them live a happier life.

I recently had a look at schizoid personality traits (because it was mentioned by another member here) and interestingly it said that someone who has those traits is unlikely to seek diagnosis or help, because they prefer not to interact with others and can be dismissive of other people. Which seems a bit of a catch 22 if they feel lonely.
It seems quite complicated, but interesting.

Apologies if I haven't interpreted those traits very well, it's new to me.

(sorry this was supposed to be directed to Mo34 but I messed up the quoting system somehow).
Hi GirlAfraid, it's a bit complicated.
My 1st dealings with mental health services where due to me having a sort of mini breakdown as I was facing housing issues, my dad attempting suicide and my mother with dementia. I took myself to A and E as I had too much pressure heaped on me (ironically by the psychiatrist who was dealing with my dad). They referred me to the CMHT and thankfully I had an amazing GP as the CMHT weren't really that bothered about picking the referral up. They helped me with practical things I guess and support around me having become Agoraphobic but I had no treatment for anything other than my GP sending me to Time to Talk. The CPN tried to get me a psychologist (there was only 1 part time psychologist for the whole service). This was denied. She tried to get me counselling. This was denied. I at no point saw a shrink (which the support worker said he'd never heard of).. That is until the CPN left and I was transferred to a MHLP who decided to discharge me. He then decided to send me to a shrink I suspect to cover his own back in case anything happened. So this is where I got a official diagnoses of social anxiety disorder. I was immediately discharged after that.

After 18months of isolation and no contact with the NHS I contacted MIND and started getting support from them. This also led me to going back to my old counsellor (privately). I stopped going to MIND for a few years but restarted. By then a scheme called Pathfinder had opened up across West Sussex. Meaning you can access a pathfinder clinician who have direct links to the CMHT's/ATS. I saw one who was a CPN for quite a while, however she left. Started seeing the new one who I think is an OT. She managed to get me in through the back door at the ATS. That hasn't been straight forward either. 1st they said I could see a shrink for a diagnosis and then they changed there mind. After a course of behavioural activation they were just going to discharge me, so I made it quite clear I wasn't happy and felt they hadn't addressed anything. So I ended up seeing a psychologist for a psychological profile (constantly reminded by them that we don't diagnose or label ppl - we prefer to look at the whole person etc.. ). And I'm still awaiting the result of that really.

So as you can see it's not that straight forward! If you have a good GP you can maybe get them to refer, but organisations like Mind can be helpful as they will know how to navigate things and the right ppl to talk to. They can also put pressure on GP's and to a lesser extent CMHT/ATS.
This is also how I got a ASD referral - as the lady that deals with referrals would come to Mind directly and see ppl if requested - No GP to have to fight through.

I'm not sure. I think technically clinical psychologists can diagnose but not prescribe.

shameful isn't it? Only one covering the county. Though i've found over the years that they sometimes lie about stuff like this! to fob you off.
