Default Top five films of all time

What are your top five? For me:

1. Withnail and I. All time favourite film. If I was living abroad, it would make me homesick. Amazing characters, great acting, and beautiful, poetic language.

2. Lawrence of Arabia. Robert Bolt’s script is like poetry. Also, gorgeous cinematography.

3. Easy Rider. The scenes in which they are riding their bikes across the desert are glorious. Worth watching just for Jack Nicholson.

4. The Life of Brian. Still the funniest film ever made.

5. Goodfellas. Unbelievable energy that just carries you along. If I switch it on half way through, I’m there until the end. Joe Pesci is mesmerising.

Honestly you lot, you’d think they stopped making films 30 years ago. So many good films made this millennium, so many great foreign language films amongst them.

Genuinely interested in any films released post 2000 that people would rate very highly, to a top-five level.

I can think of zero, so I'm all ears.

^ Juno and Amelie were both released post 2000. So was Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind actually.

Yeah, it’s something we tend to overlook. The Lives of Others is superb. I’m a bit of a Francophile as well, and love all the old black and white French stuff - Jules and Jim for example.

Obviously entirely subjective but it’s a pretty damning indictment of the film industry over the last two decades, and surely foreign films are just, well, films aren’t they, no distinction needing to be made...

Kill Bill 1 and 2
The Prestige
Walk the Line
13 Tzameti
36 Quai des Orfèvres
Mesrine 1 and 2
Gladiator
City of God
City of Men
This is England
Dead Man’s Shoes
Sicario
Maria Full of Grace
Wind River
Elite Squad
A Beautiful Mind
Headhunters
End of Watch
The Town
One Hour Photo

On the list above

As I say, purely subjective, but for me looking outside of the Hollywood gravy train reaps rich rewards. Completely agree on French cinema, some fantastic stuff, both comedies, drama and thrillers, a fair few featuring our very own ‘darling’ of French film Kristin Scott-Thomas.

@Consolida:
It's a Wonderful Life always seems to be on top of those TV countdown shows of Best Christmas Movies so i gave it a go about 4 years ago. Got about an hour into it and gave up. Found it so dull and boring.
