^ I saw that a lady was selling her used socks online and making a tidy sum. Is this a business venture you'd be interested in?
Spuddy's Cheesy Socks that he wore when eating fish and chips - £20 each. |

There was someone here, long ago, who said something about a fetish for 'chav socks'. I can't remember whether he was speaking for himself or not. |

This should be in the confessions thread, but i really do envy foot fetishists. Honestly. It really bugs me that i don't 'get it'.

I can appreciate a nice foot and find bad feet troubling. They could even be a deal breaker I suppose. But I wouldn't say I fetishise them.

You can also sell foot shavings.
Sorry - not ideal lunch time posting. Sorry to anyone having some Parmesan right now. |

Re: Type what you're thinking about right now (11)
Random thoughts for today: Kind of worried that I'm not going to understand people very well after I move. ^_^; I already seem to have trouble listening to people here because I have audio processing troubles when people speak to me.
There are so many different varieties of accents in the UK! I love hearing them. I just worry I'll offend someone when I keep asking "what?" over and over again. Oh. And this just made me cringe in remembering something that happened yesterday LOL. A coworker was giving my a phone number and some reason my brain kept confusing the word seven with zero. It was so weird. x_x She was nice aobut it though and helped me, but it's embarrassing ack! |

Re: Type what you're thinking about right now (11)
^ I wouldn't worry too much - unless you're moving about the country on a daily basis.. ? You'll adjust to hearing the accent that's local to where you live and High Wycombe, i wouldn't have thought, has a strong/difficult accent ... i very much doubt just looking at it's location.

Re: Type what you're thinking about right now (11)
^^
I'm sure you will be fine, SpectralOwls! Like Spud said, you will adjust in time. And if you are unsure, then do what I do. Which is to smile politely and nod your head in agreement. Although truth be told, that can sometimes backfire on you. Especially if the words "medical emergency" are mentioned. So maybe it's best to get a bit of clarification if you are unsure. Even I am still learning. Lately for example, I'm into Yorkshire sayings. Such as: ee bah gum I'll go to the foot of our stairs There’s trouble at t’mill Oh and something about whippets But again, I'm sure you will be fine! I also want to add that I meant no disrespect to Yorkshire. I'm a big fan of Yorkshire. Especially their puddings! |

Re: Type what you're thinking about right now (11)
Thank you, guys!
Yeah, you have a point, Rocket Spud. ^_^ At least I've gotten used to my fiance's voice, so perhaps it won't be so bad!! I think the accents seem not as thick there by my standards haha. LOL, Chess!! I'll keep that in mind. I also need to try that still! |

Re: Type what you're thinking about right now (11)
This is my very rough guide of all the English accents..
- most places within 50-60 miles of London/the M25 sound similar - there's west country (Cornwall/Devon/Dorset) accent - Birmingham - Most 'North'/North-west cities (Manchester, Liverpool, etc.) have their own accent - Yorkshire - and the north-east (Newcastle. etc) Lol, i'm sure people will chip in now and right me but that's about it. The 'home counties' accent is pretty easy to understand. |

Re: Type what you're thinking about right now (11)
He seems to think that it's accurate! ^ :D
It's really interesting! I was reading a thread on the American Expat (UK) reddit, and some of the users were saying that over time Irish accents started sounding like Southern US accents to them. I wonder if that'll happen to me? I also wonder if I'll start to pick up on one myself. |
|
|||
Re: Type what you're thinking about right now (11)
What, like anywhere in the US? That's .. weird. I haven't a clue about this sort of thing. I would guess that some people, whether consciously or not, are more susceptible to change in the way they talk/sound - over a given period of time, of course. Unless you're Zelig .... (points awarded for getting that reference!). I would stubbornly refuse to change! |

Re: Type what you're thinking about right now (11)
I'm sure the US has a whooole lot of variants of dialect as well, but generally it's divided between northern or southern accent. The south has the really strong accent, like when you think of Texas or Louisiana. I think when people stereotype American accents from other countries they probably think of that first.
So perhaps it's the brain adjusting to the English accents. If you're an American (from the North), move to England, fully adjust to listening to English accents, suddenly Irish accents sound similar to Southern US accents to your own perception. Super interesting! |
