Default The Transit of Venus

^ an event which takes place just after 11pm tonight and offers a rare opportunity to see the planet passing across the face of the sun

on BBC2 now it happens twice a century, might be worth a watch

From what i've seen its really small. You might just be able to see if without obviously you need sunglasses or probably proper type ones.

When there was an eclipse i used to just look at it through my tshirt and i was okay lol.

Would of been kinda cool to see. Its quite amazing how small venus looks compared to the sun, and venus is a whole planet =P.

Also consider that as its closer than the Sun, it's effectively making Venus look bigger than it is (relative to the Sun).

Thread title sounds like a good band name or the name for the new Ford range of vans.

I saw this on the news, they were showing people around the world - Excitable school kids in Japan, cool young people in Norway, a smiley teacher who had taken her kids out of class for the day in France and a bunch of moody middle aged men in the UK.

Saw for a few minutes on stream yesterday (Or day b4 I forget) as wasnt ganna see it outside.

Even though it was cool to look at and such people in the stream seemed to be more excited than necessary. I actually used to have a hobby with such things too.. Though not anymore.

^ that, can think of many more spectacular visual things and involving space too (suppose its not likely they'd see it again can be a factor). With that said I understand the importance and what the scientific/ astronomic communities can learn from events like this (being halfway in a physics degree helps that).

If I lived in a better place to see it (both time and weather) I probably would have done so but I doubt I would have been full of excitement, more like curiosity.
