Visitor Messages - how to delete them?

A while back I deleted some messages I'd received, in order to have a tidy up. But instead, now it just says 'message deleted by...' Is there any way to get rid of those entries?

I wouldn't want to put anyone to any trouble, it's not a big deal.

I guess most people just leave the old messages rather than try to delete them.
