I watched the Living Doll episode of the Twilight Zone when I was very young - 6/7 or younger. Can't find a whole episode:

it gave me a fear of flipping dolls for years! I had a big walking doll that was about 2ft high called Lizzie which I had to put outside my bedroom at night.

Nightmare on Elm St which I watched when I was I dunno 8/9/10 (we had just got a VCR from radio rentals lol).

Ha I'm just of the age where I remember VCRs! Beta Max VCRs or something.

Think there was a Simpsons episode with a horror doll. The film must have been based on that. Terrifying young children from dolls. I don't think my gran can have watched it- she had a whole room of dolls.

lol that makes me feel old! VCR's where either VHS or Betamax. Not sure what the diffrence was - other than I remember Betamax being smaller and one reel? (my memory might be wrong on that). We always had VHS.

Did she - probably not then!

(A room of them )

Hm it might not have been Betamax then I'm not sure. Maybe it was VHS.

Yeah I reckon I got a picture somewhere of these dolls, or I hope I do. It was a shame when she died. I'm sure my mum just rid them all.

I think I always liked horror films as a kid, nothing scared me all that much back then,

I do recall getting a bit freaked out in my late teens by a film called The Crazies,

I think it was set in America in the deep south,
And somehow, the local water supply had been contaminated,
But the result was that the adults just started going crazy,
The first scene I recall was a father running amock in his family home with a shotgun, just going about blowing the heads off his kids,
I seem to recall it was pretty brutal,

(I appear to have said recall a lot there - I think I may watch Total Recall later )

I remember going for a wee half way through Jurassic Park at the cinema.

Jurassic Park is one of my favourite films ever, but I was probably too little to handle it at the time of release.

This bit in Tremors gave me a fright as a kid

Big one for me was an early episode of The X Files about the 'face on Mars'. Absolutely terrified me, and I couldn't look at the ceiling in bed for years. I built it up in my imagination until I watched it again as an adult, and it's kind of laughable Hokey early 90's made for TV CGI.

Tron
The bit where the guy gets pulled into the computer really scared me, and I decided for some reason that it happened in a small market town that I'd been to, so I vowed never to go back there.
I can't remember any of the rest of the film.

Beethoven

When the evil vet man had tricked the family into thinking Beethoven was a dangerous dog and needed to be put down. We’d recently had the cat that was with me from birth put down and I felt awful that Beethoven was going to be put down unnecessarily. I was balling my eyes out. That traumatised me.

Looks like The Crazies been remade. Did George A. Romero make anything but zombie type movies? Not my favourite horror genre...

Is it just me or did it seem like parents back in the day allowed their kids to watch horror films willy nilly?

I remember as a 10 year old, I sat in the sofa while my dad was watching The Shining and he didn't bother changing the channel. I ended up watching it with him and was genuinely traumatised.

That sh*t doesn't happen these days. Me and my partner had serious discussions for DAYS before we allowed my 9 year old to watch Harry bloody Potter.

^ depends on back in what day. I grew up in the 60s and 70s, wasn't allowed to watch The Sweeney or anything after 9pm until I was something like 14.

I was watching stuff like Robocop and Terminator 2 waaaay earlier than I should have been. Not even secretly; I think I got Terminator 2 on video for Christmas when I was about 9. My parents didn't seem too fussed about violence, just thought it was daft, but too much effing and jeffing would probably get something switched off.

Glad I don't have to make those kinds of parenting decisions. I'd be torn between obviously not wanting my kids to watch some gratuitous gorefest, and thinking how boring my childhood would have been if I'd had to wait until I was 18 to see anything juicy.

^ it was much easier for parents to 'police' what children watch in the 70s and horror was far less violent and gory. Few had more than one TV and VHS were mostly non-existent until later. I think it's better to shield children from horror, violence and pornography until mid to late teens.

Oh so true. Not just parents either. I lived for about 5 years 4 or so houses down from a kind of make do corner shop (it was converted from a terracced house) she started stocking videos to rent. We would go in as kids and rent whatever we wanted, 18's no prob. (lol I used to go in and buy 20 lambert and butler for my mum aswell - tbf she knew it was for my mum). I left there when I was 13 and 1/2. So she clearly wasn't making a 'mistake' about renting 15 or 18 films.

I also ended up with an old portable tv in my room so would watch late night TV like The Word and Euro Trash which i really shouldn't have been.
