Taste of the Old Skool

Posted 2nd February 2011 at 05:04 by Drimma

Despite myself I made it on time, 8am sharp, and considering we weren't being paid that was an achievement.

Awkward Moment One:
Characters: Benny, Actor 1, 2 and me. Location: Back of a taxi cab.

I felt it with the demoralising pang of recognition. My old playground emotions flushed in me one more time for old time sakes.

They were enthralled in conversation, the dynamic type, it was inventive spontaneous, boisterous, you had to volumize above the norm for your clever quip to be heard, command the attention at times by reaching out and halting someone in the midst of their own juicy tangent to hear your not so humble own. Conversations overlapped, they teased Actor 2, exaggerated a natural incident to grotesquely absurd and comical proportions. Recalled past events unrelated, compared him to fictional characters and there-in did impersonations to bring their point home.
He tried to defend himself but the onslaught was relentless, jibbing quips came from lips still in full vibrations of laughter and yet another after that to out do it in undocumented scores.
Finally he relented, ushered in his own jocose remarks since by now the conversation had evolved, no longer a teasing feast but a testosterone fuelled competition of producing the quickest and wittiest inanities on grounds unspoken but understood.
Now it's not that I didn't have my own rip-roaring stings, for I did, and since there was not an iota of malicious intent involved I was not held back by anything except, when I dared utter them they drowned in a cacophony of other laughter or were to subtle to illicit the belly-aching release required and thus rejected - just like I had all those years back in high school - I conjured up a a trick to deflect my dejection. I whipped out my phone and recorded in atrocious quality the goings on.

Awkward Moment Two:
Characters: Actress, Actor 2 and me
Location: Actress Car

Wrapping up today's farcical shoot I was offered a lift by one of the actress's back to Luton. So she drove with me besides her and Actor 2 silent in the back.
I ventured conversation.
"So have you done other films then?"
"Oh so you prefer theatre?"
"Where are you doing that?"
My repertoire of basic interview style questions evoked just as lacklustre responses. I grew conscious of the silent observer in the rear seat, what did he make of my social ineptitudes? Gripped by anxiety I lulled into silence. She picked up and tried to revive that dead dog of a conversation and as her passenger I was obliged to help her drag that rotting carcass some twenty odd more minutes.
