What job would you really love?

If you could choose any job what would it be? I would love to be an historian.

The way I feel at the moment, audio typing, stock sheets, anything that requires attention to detail, methodical skills and limited contact with other people!

Something to do with animal rescue/welfare. And/or artist.

Oh working with animals - pets, horses, wildlife. Would be my dream job. I'm lucky to volunteer with animal sanctuary's at present.

Other than that I'd be quite happy being paid to do genealogical research.

Re: What job would you really love?

I would like to work two part time jobs rather than a single full time one please. Chief beer tester at the paulaner brewery in munich and chemical purity tester in the netherlands or perhaps columbia.

I would like the weekends and wednesday afternoon off please to pursue my hobbies.

In all seriosity I have attempted most of the things I thought I wanted to do and they have been ruined once they become a chore. All that is left is living in the woods and making charcoal. Thats a genuine hope.

Did you get that idea from Grand Designs.

There was an episode where a charcoal burner built a timber framed house.

Re: What job would you really love?

^ I do remember seeing that yonks ago, his name was ben right ? He shat in a hole :)

Then some female watched the program and they ended up together. I had wanted to live in a forest before that but I may have added the charcoal element after seeing this. But why wouldnt you, what a great life.

As you know from another thread I have tried a few things and I think the only way to actually feel worthwhile in life/work is to physically make something. To get to the end of a week and see things in front of me that if it werent for my efforts would not exist.

Websites, apps and sound doesnt really count. Glad I figured that out after 25 years of trying. Some kind of carpentry or engineering I reckon. I have been an engineer for a few years but I got steered towards CNC and computing purely because I was good at it, and then I just lost interest.

What a place to live that would be though. You could live off hobbit meat 24/7.

^ I remember his previous living quarters were pretty dire, don***8217;t remember about the toilet situation

Carpentry would be a nice skill to have. I laid a laminate wooden floor in my kitchen, no skill required, but it was satisfying nonetheless.

I think people who change career would appreciate their new jobs much more than if they had worked in them all their life, so there is something useful out of a bit of variety.

Re: What job would you really love?

^ A cafe for cats or a cafe with cats ?

The flumpsy siblings bought the elder flumpsy-mum some vouchers for a cat based cafe in london. IIRC the feedback was "the cats were nice". I got the feeling short term adult cat exposure didnt float her boat.

flumpsy 7th September 2017 00:49

Re: What job would you really love?

^ I think she loved the idea but in reality it was just a cafe with other peoples adult cats at just beyond arms length away from you. I mean thats what adult cats do, they tolerate unknown humans in their space.

Let me know when you open I will send her an invite. And get her to bring the dishwasher :)

was just going to write something similar,..

I recall rescuing some animals when I've been out walking in the countryside,
and I have to say it was seriously fulfilling, doing something like that full-time would be really rewarding I think.

I used to draw and paint a lot, but daily working routines have left me with very little energy or enthusiasm to keep it up, so I'd love to get back to doing what I love.

I think I'd also like to get into garden design / landscaping,.. but it can be brutally hard work at times.

Construction site manager, 60 grand a year and I can tell other people what to do instead of the current morons I usually have to work under with zero experience.

I'd love to own a cat sanctuary <3
Composer (if, y'know I could actually write a score)
Musician
Writer
Physicist
Artist

I think being a writer is probably the most achievable.

I guess in a hypothetical dream world I'd like to be a musician, artist or some other airy - fairy type.

I would like to be a writer. I'm not sure I'd have the self-discipline though and it'd be pretty isolating.

Second to that, working with children, which is what I do now. Although I like to refer to it as cat herding.

Re: What job would you really love?

If my SA wasn't a barrier to doing pretty much everything...

I would love to work in an animal sanctuary, perhaps one that rescues wild animals (as in hedgehogs and foxes not tigers and crocodiles) with the view to getting them back to full health and re releasing them...

Or, I'd like to do something creative. I've always fantasised, for as long as I can remember, about creating something aesthetically beautiful - like a painting, a sculpture, or even writing books or composing poems. To have such grandiose dreams and zero talent is extremely frustrating :crying:

Or, following the creative theme, I'd love to be a landscape gardener - transforming a derelict piece of wasteland into a green oasis of beauty and tranquility :spin:

Or, I'd like to run my own little tea shop that sells homemade Victoria sponges, fruit scones with Jam and clotted cream, freshly baked bread (you get the picture :tongue1:) and is also a place for local people to showcase their arts and crafts.

Oh, and finally...

Some form of Nursing or care work, either medical or something more therapeutic, where I can make a positive difference to people's lives. I used to really fancy being a social worker, but I think I'd be rubbish at that as I know from my long ago stint in Nursing, that I wouldn't be able to stop myself from getting too emotionally involved :bricks:

I think that's all :embarrass:

British peace, I genuinely hope that you do someday achieve your dream of becoming an Historian, as at 27 there's still a lot of time to start over :smile2:

Re: What job would you really love?

1 I'd love to have my own business - I've got so many ideas but you need money to make money. I would also need a business partner who could take care of the social side of things like liaising with potential clients and buyers etc.

2 Disability/welfare rights solicitor. I think that I would've been good at this, partly because I've had years of experience navigating the welfare system, which would put me in a good position to help other people who have similar issues. I know there are things I could do that may put me on this pathway, like volunteering at citizens advice or any other similar organisation, but I don't feel up to it at the moment.

2 Neuroscientist specialising in Autism. This is obviously a total pipe dream because not only do you have to start young, you have to attend medical school and I don't think I'm intelligent enough to study science at that level. It's a shame, because people who are on the spectrum are encouraged to study niche subjects because there will be less competition when it comes to finding a job.

Re: What job would you really love?

I would like to own a Hot Chocolate Cafe that serves all kinds of amazing flavours; it would double as a second hand bookshop with a reading room so that people could just relax and spend time in a peaceful atmosphere and there would be one or two resident cats that would sleep on the shelves.
I would also be writing novels in my spare time which would be made into films.
I already work with animals and although I love my job it barely pays the bills, as is the case for most careers with animals but if money was no impediment I would love to run a wildlife sanctuary.

I would have loved to be a Theatrical Lighting Designer. If I go to the theatre I usually end up watching the stage lights rather than the show (sad, I know). But at least I generally know how they have created the mood etc., I just want to see what luminaires they are using for what jobs.

Years ago (over 20) I used to work in a theatre as a technician on the lights & sound, I even designed the lighting for an operetta, Die Fledermaus, it was proper theatre 1200 seats, on 4 levels.

Re: What job would you really love?

I guess the only job I've ever envied someone for having is those that work with animals in some way. A ranger at a safari park or a cameraman for a BBC nature documentary. Before Hendrix and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles David Attenborough was my hero as a kid. Still is.

Bed tester (testing different mattresses overnight at home each week).

Admittedly the weekly changeover would be a bit of a hassle, but would still be worth it if the money was good. Can't find any vacancies online though.

^Yeah I can see that being the ideal job for you, LS. It would give you more time to lie in bed and mind meld with the universe while getting paid for it!

It's true- a lot of history books are badly written. Some of them don't even seem to be proofread properly. The proofreader must have fallen asleep. It doesn't inspire confidence. When you do get a historian that can write properly, they can become quite well known.
