Phoned two people today, just for a chat. I can't remember the last time I did that... it's possible I haven't been the initiator, even, in my entire life! So that's progress for me.

My job ended today, was supposed to be next Wednesday but the budget holders have spoken.

Why did you post it in this thread, Tom?
I didn't have a nervous breakdown, and I'm actually embracing the thought of having the festive period completely work-free. Fresh start in January, onwards and upwards. Could have been better, but could have been much, much worse.

I wrapped a present earlier today then headed to the shops. Came home an hour later to find a large piece of tape stuck to the side of my face (I'm a messy wrapper) I didn't explode with anxiety with the knowledge that I conversed with 3 retail assistants. I didn't replay my taped visage voyage through the shops over and over again. I accepted it and moved on :-)

Went to return some belts today. The young women behind the counter was gorgeous and so sweet! Just before I opened my mouth to speak the music stopped and 'Let's get it on' started playing. I nearly messed up my rehearsed line! When she was sorting the return out I started humming along being a Marvin Gaye fan 'n' all and then she started to hum along too.. it made me get that feeling, you know? I wanted .. ahem.

I was still pretty anxious but left with a big smile on my face as in the past I would've been a stuttering mess in the same situation. I saw her later on that afternoon waiting for a bus. Of course I didn't approach or acknowledge her, do I seem normal like a normal human being to you?!

Still progress though!

It still brings a smile to my face remembering it now..

"Right, just go to the counter and say 'I'd like to return these belts [videotapes?] please' and prepare your justification and have your smalltalk ready."
"Wow, she's stunning. Please let it be someone else who deals with me."
"Ah FFS. Deep breaths. Just try to act normal. Must not appear weird. Here we go..."

and then as I'm about to open my mouth.. bwow bwow bwow bwowwww

^ well done that's another thing I avoid doing: returning things to store incase they say I can't return it or ask me why I want to take something back.

Did a group presentation at uni. Terrifying but it could've been worse. I think the group meetings were more scary than the actual presentation in some ways.

^Same. It was college not uni but the feelings were the same. It was a major issue for me and something that consumed me for weeks before. I almost had to pretend to be someone else to get through it. Like acting. I spoke loud and maintained eye contact. I even made a joke. Then the clock struck 12, the carriage became a pumpkin and before I knew it, I was back to my old self :-/

Well done Memory!

Relieved that it was over! I know I didn't do brilliantly - I was reading from my notes the whole time but at least I managed to look up throughout to make eye contact. All I need is to pass though!

I tried not to think about it too much. I think it helped that the rest of my group were feeling similar (which surprised me because they all seem confident as they always contribute in class discussions etc.) so I wasn't alone in finding the prospect terrifying. I think it also helped that my group had practiced it a few times earlier in the day.

Learnt a couple of chords on the guitar! I've been wanting to learn how to play for a long time, but procrastinated constantly. Recently, and with the help of a friend (I do feel quite self-conscious in front of him when he's trying to teach me but I'm going to stick with it), I've started to knuckle down with it more seriously. It feels good to be learning something new and to have a hobby more productive than fudging around on the internet, especially as it involves facing one of my fears which is embarrassing myself in front of someone who's better at something than me.

I phoned my friend tonight. She's my oldest friend (we've been friends for about 12 years) and even though we don't get to see each other that much due to not living that close any more/our jobs getting in the way etc, she's still the best friend i've ever had - we always have a laugh when we hang out and i can talk to her about anything. But despite this i kept promising myself i'd phone her, just for a chat and to maybe try and sort out meeting up again some time soon, then kept putting it off - not because i didn't want to talk to her, quite the opposite in fact, but because i'm basically crap at keeping in touch with people. This i think is largely due to my SA: i can't help but think people won't/don't really want to talk to me or hear from me, even close friends and family, and i worry about what we'll talk about if i do ring them. Then this voice inside my head berates me for being such a shit friend and not making more of an effort (even if the other person hasn't made much of an effort either) which makes me feel awful and so the cycle continues

But tonight i did manage to phone her and we chatted for a good 15 or 20 minutes about what we'd been up to, Christmas and other stuff. It was lovely and i'm really pleased i did it now
