Successfully medicated?
Just thought id put together a poll to see which medication appears to be most successful amongst members in helping with the symptoms of social anxiety......
if the medication you take isnt listed in the poll just check 'other' then post a reply of what it is you have taken successfully. Also posting dose size etc would be helpful too. im currently taking prozac (20mg) and have been taking it for about 8months......it has been successful in the past but has been less successful this time round.... im looking into maybe uping the dose or trying somthing different. |

Re: Successfully medicated?
what poll?
ive taken paroxetine (made me sliighhhtly more proactive, otherwise just numb and didnt actually care that anything was wrong, no sense of urgency). annnnd escitalopram, just made me more tired. On the SA front really not a whole lot. However being more proactive can lead to an improvement in SA, however it wouldnt be the drug specifically doing it edit: oh i didnt see the poll! I guess I dont need to vote (see above) |

Re: Successfully medicated?
I've tried Prozac (fluoxetine) and Ciplralex (escitalipram) and hated them both, so the answer for me would none.
And I wouldn't try meds again unless as a last resort... though I'm pretty close to last resort territory at the moment, so we will see. |

Re: Successfully medicated?
second time on seroxat and it just takes away worries and stops me thinking about things that would make me feel down when i'm not on seroxat. I still get anxious when lots of people are around though but don't dwell on the situation so much afterwards when i'm not around them anymore i.e did i do this wrong, should I have said that. Is better than prozac and citalopram for me anyway.

Re: Successfully medicated?
I didn't have much joy with paroxetine at all.
I've been on reboxetine (Edronax) for several months now. I had insomnia again to start with (which I had with paroxetine too), but I seem to be a lot better on the reboxetine...more stable. Still no highs, but I'm content just to have fewer lows at the moment |

Re: Successfully medicated?
I've been on citalopram for a grand total of 2 days so I can't really comment so far!

Re: Successfully medicated?
So its looking as if not many members are being successfully treated with medication....
or finding a particular medication is helping them on their path to lessen their social anxiety and lead a more forfilling life. i think theres about 3000 members on this forum and only 28 have voted... so is medication unsuccessful? or are sa suffers having better results without medication? |

Re: Successfully medicated?
I've tried citalopram and mirtazipine.
Citalopram made me far worse, mirtazapine just helped my sleep and nothing else. Best thing I ever did was give up being a medication guinea pig and push for CBT. |

Re: Successfully medicated?
10 years ago a mixture of CBT and Marplan cured my social phobia by 90%. I still suffered anxiety which I managed to combat by Buddhist chanting. In fact, I was so well that over the last 3 years I reduced the dose of the meds to nothing and came off them in June. In October I found myself back to square with a flood of panic and feelings of social inadequacy and wanting to avoid. So, back to the drawing board . Back on the meds and chanting. It worked before, it will work again.

Re: Successfully medicated?
Citalopram - but more for depression than anxiety. I expect it does help anxiety too because I don't experience much anxiety these days although I still have big problems with socialising.

Re: Successfully medicated?
I'm on Propranolol, 3 a day.
They really do work with me. Could be better, but a millions times better then beforehand. |

Re: Successfully medicated?
I've tried fluoxetine and citalopram which didn't work for me.
I went on seroxat (paroxetine?) when I was about 15 and it completely got rid of all my SA symptoms but the side-effects were awful, much worse than the others. Having said that guidance has since come out advising GPs not to prescribe Seroxat to under 18s for that very reason. I dont know though, it's a difficult call. At that point in my life I think if I hadn't have had that break from the SA I would most likely have ended up taking my own life. If my SA ever gets that bad again I think I would gladly put up with the horrible side-effects if it relieves the pain of the SA. |

Re: Successfully medicated?
Sorry just to clear up...Seroxat is paroxetine, I think it's just the UK brand name whereas Paxil is the US one, or vice versa.

Re: Successfully medicated?
I didn't vote for any of the options, I have tried a few drugs on there in different doses and combinations. I only took what I deemed to be suitable, and haven't tried all the medications.
I have taken fluoxetine, sertraline & buproprion out of that list. Fluoxetine I only had for a few months, found it made me a bit edgy so I went back to the sertraline. I used to sometimes take buproprion along with the sertraline for some added kick. Although I didn't take that combination long term. I currently take 150mg of sertraline, and have been taking this dose for 6 months+. I do find the medication has been a help to me. |
