Default What does "Good Sense Of Humour" mean?

In dating profiles and such people will invariably say they want to meet someone with "a great sense of humour". What exactly is meant by this? Does it mean being able to tell jokes/funny stories and make people laugh? I'm not a particularly serious person and I enjoy humour but because of my anxiety I probably come across as a bit miserable as I find it very difficult to laugh out loud and doubt I'm very good at making other people laugh either.

So what does 'Good Sense of Humour' mean to you?

To me that just means being able to laugh at something which is funny, not necessarily being funny yourself. But, a lot of people include it as being able to have a bit of a laugh at yourself too (ie if someone points out something funny you do, not immediately taking it personally and being able to laugh about it). I find the last one hard though if I don't know the person well enough.

I realise this may make me sound like a miserable bint, but I hate it when people describe themselves as having a good sense of humour. Humour is a very personal thing, generally, if someone describes themselves as having an amazing sense of humour I would automatically read that as tw@t who thinks they're funny, but probably isn't, you just know a lot of their sentences are going to start "and this one time, at band camp, it was sooo funny". Yeah, sunshine, let your audience be the judge of that.

It's more important to find someone whos sense of humour is on the same wavelength as your own.

Yep quite! Like you say I think when someone says about someone else they have 'a good sense of humour' what they often mean is they have a similar sense of humour to themselves.

I don't think its anything to do with making jokes or telling funny stories. Everyone's has a different view of sense of humours and I think its all about clicking with someone (who has the same humour as you) and being able to laugh with each other. Whether its just being silly around each other, watching something you both find funny or just being loose with each other (not in a sexual way ). It's really hard to explain hmmmmmm .

I think it's probably just trying to rule out abnormally serious people.

I`d take it to mean that really. That and someone who can laugh at themselves i.e. not some hideously serious pompous type.

Usually means they think they are hilarious when in fact they come out with cliche after cliche. Means they are funnier than anyone else ever could be...a oneupmanship thing which is in fact delusional....likes to give the impression they are easy going when in fact they are wound up like the highest note on a violin string. All describe me.

I assume it means quick witted but overconfident loudmouths who only think they're funny seem to be quite successful with the ladies so it might mean that. My profile says 'I think I'm funny but I'm probably not' think I should try and sound more confident?

To me having a good sense of humour is being able to spot something funny when it happens and understand how and why it was funny but more so the ability to take advantage of situations when there's an opportunity to be funny or create humour, even if out of nothing.

I think the seriousness/maturity of a person is alot more important compared to how good there sense of humour is in terms of how easy it will be to connect and make each other laugh.

i think it means liking the same KIND of humor.
because not everyone agrees on what's funny.

for example i hate people who think practical-jokes, or 'pranks', are funny.
(being 'punked' or whatever they call it now).

Red face Re: What does "Good Sense Of Humour" mean?

You know self loathing be damned I actually do have a good sense of humour. It's just that I find it difficult to express it.

If someone was described as having no sense of humour. It wouldn't bring to mind an anxious or shy person. It would bring to mind someone who took themselves too seriously or actively disliked humour. Maybe someone like Joseph Stalin (extreme example obviously).
